Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does it normally take to receive calculations from a Structural Engineer and how much do they charge?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. You should ask your Structural Engineer when you first contact them to see how busy they are. If your project is time sensitive, then you will be able to move on to the next engineer quickly, if they are too busy. For us at Avatar Engineers, we specialise in small scale projects for the residential/private sector. This means we can turn projects around in days, to a few weeks after visiting your home.

As for charges, this is highly dependant on the complexity of your project. Again, for us at Avatar Engineers, since we only take on domestic sized projects, very rarely do we spend more than £1000. Mostly we are about half that cost.

Q. Do I need to consult a Structural Engineer for my project?Frequently Asked Questions

This is a very good question. In reality you will need to ask a structural engineer this question once you have a project in mind. If however you already have a builder or architect working for you, then they will also have a good idea as to whether an engineer is required for your project. Another answer will require that you call up your local Building Control Offices and describe the project to them. The litmus test is, if Building Control require structural calculations; then you will need to consult an engineer.

Q. How long does it normally take to receive a fee estimate from a structural engineer and how accurate will it be?

This is highly dependant on the level of information that you have provided them with. An experienced structural engineer will require little information to come up with a plan of action for you. This may require a quick site visit and investigation though. If the project is a large one, then allow for at least 4-5 days for the engineer to come back with an estimate and a list of deliverables.
