Do You Need a Structural Engineer?
Probably your two most important questions as a home owner, looking to get your project started. Do you need a Structural Engineer? And (of course) WHY do you need a Structural Engineer?
Here at Avatar Engineers we love to answer those questions. Firstly, if another construction professional i.e. Architect, Surveyor or Builder has recommended that you find an Engineer, then your first question has been answered. If you haven’t approached an Architect or Builder yet, then get more of a ‘feel‘ by trying our fun flow-chart below (click for full size).
For the second question, this can be a little bit more tricky. Engineering services, for domestic sized projects, generally require an engineering report, to prove that your proposed alterations are compliant with Building Regulations. Some of your alterations will NOT require a calculations report, though. Always check with your chosen Engineer.
Not only will an Engineer provide you with calculations, they will also be considering the buildability of your project. This includes specifying steel beams, lintels, foundations, wall sizes, roof rafters and floor joists. The creative part (for Engineers) is to make sure that the elements specified; can be purchased, lifted and installed.
Finally, very often engineering services are engaged late in a projects life, due to complications in the construction, arising. However, if you already have been working with an Engineer, then picking up the phone and calling them to resolve a problem is by far easier. We trust that you found this information valuable. Do not hesitate to call us if you require a Structural Engineer.
